Network Registration Instructions – Basic The following steps will help you gain access to the UW-Superior network with your computer in your room. Follow these basic steps before contacting ResNet for assistance. DO NOT plug your computer in to the network until told to. 1. Remove your old antivirus program. 2. Restart your computer, and plug in your network cable to the appropriate jack. You will need an Ethernet cable. This will look like a phone cord, but instead of having 4 little gold ends, it will have 8. Ostrander residents will plug their Ethernet cable in to the black ports, while everyone else uses the orange port. 3. Open your web browser. PC users, Internet Explorer MUST be your default browser in order for Clean Access to work correctly. MAC and Linux users, you may use your selected browser. 4. Log in to the first page of Clean Access using your UW-Superior username and password, or your provided Clean Access WITC, LSC, or DBU user account. 5. Install the Clean Access agent (follow the on-screen instructions). 6. Install the Clean Access updates (if any, follow the on-screen instructions). 7. When Clean Access is installed, you will need to sign in to the actual Clean Access program. Clean Access will guide you through the installation of whatever your computer needs that it requires. Clean Access will look for certain XP service packs and fixes, Symantec Antivirus (Windows and MAC users, and UWS students) or AVG Antivirus (Windows users, and WITC/LSC/DBU students), and Windows updates (Windows only). Once the appropriate software is installed, Clean Access will allow you network access. Linux users, your computer will by-pass the previous scans. a. If you are required to install Symantec Antivirus, you will need to put “uwsuper\” in front of your user name (for example – uwsuper\jdoe). After you put your username information and password in the correct boxes, select o.k., and the installation process will start. If there is other text in the username box other than what is listed above, please remove that text before proceeding. 8. You will need to select the appropriate version of Symantec that will co-inside with your PC. If you select the wrong version, the installation will fail and you will need to select a different one. NOTE When installing Symantec Antivirus, you will be brought to a separate page that has 5 different versions of Symantec Antivirus on it. Clean Access is designed to be a real-time protector of the UW-Superior network. Every time you shut your computer down, you will have to sign in to Clean Access. The scans will go much quicker, but you will have to log back in. If you choose to leave your computer on 24/7, Clean Access will disconnect your network every 48 hours, so be aware of this before starting any prolonged internet usage (for example, gaming). If you have a video game system that you wish to hook up to the internet, you will need to bring your gaming device to ResNet (system, power cord, controller, standard television hookups – no HD hookups), and we will get your system to use on-line. After you try the steps above and you have any further questions, please contact ResNet at 715-394-8439, or stop down by our office. We’re located in the basement of the Rothwell Student Center, room 52.
