Frequenty Asked Questions
ResNet Questions
- What is ResNet?
ResNet is the main technology department for students who live in the Residence Halls. We try to support anything that deals with technology, including computer issues, network setup, telephone problems, cable television issues, video game consoles, and voicemail concerns. All in all, we try to help with anything technology related within the Halls.
- How much doest ResNet cost?
ResNet does not cost students in the Residence Halls anything extra! Since we are affiliated with Residence Life, your fees help pay for your costs, so no extra fee is needed (for service only).
- Are ResNet services just for UWS Residence Life residents?
Mostly. If you currently live in the Residence Halls (you must have your student ID for verification), we will do our best to serve you. We also assist the entire campus with the use of wireless technology on campus. We do not support any student that lives off campus unless they are trying to get their wireless laptop working with the school’s wireless network.
- Where is the ResNet office?
We are located in the basement of the Rothwell Student Center (RSC) room number 52. We are situated between Campus Safety and the Residence Life mailboxes.
Connection Questions
- How do I connect to ResNet?
Please refer to the section labeled "Connecting to ResNet." Also, there will be a short information sheet placed in your room before the school year that will give the first few steps to getting connected.
- How do I activate my University ID account?
Any questions regarding your UWS student account should be directed towards the Computing and Media Services office at 715-394-8300.
- I am not a UWS student, but I live in the Residence Halls. Can I still connect?
Yes. We are currently working with Computing and Media Services to get accounts for all non-UWS students that live in the residence halls so you may connect to the network. If we cannot get accounts for students, we will manually perform the correct installs and upgrades to your computer, and we’ll manually place your computer on the network.
- Do I need my own computer?
If you can afford your own computer, you will probably find that it will be a great convenience for you. If you cannot afford your own computer, one may be available at Computing and Media Services (laptops only). Contact CMS at 715-394-8300 to reserve a laptop.
- Is my current computer good⁄new⁄snazzy enough to connect?
– We like to make sure students have what they will need to get themselves through four years of college. Since technology is changing all the time, the networking technology changes as well. Please refer to the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX section that talks about the current minimum specifications for your computer. ResNet will try to get any computer working with the network, but we can’t guarantee that all computers, both old and new, will work with our network. We will do our best to get every computer to work on our network. ResNet does reserve the right to not work on computers that do not meet our minimum specifications.
- Am I required to have antivirus software?
You will be required to have the UWS Antivirus software, which will be provided to you at the beginning of the school year for free. DO NOT PURCHASE A NEW ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM. You will need to remove any antivirus program before you can install our antivirus software. If ResNet works on a computer, we will remove any and all forms of antivirus software programs before we put ours on.
- Am I allowed to have a static IP address?
No you are not. Please refer to our “Policies” page to know more about this policy.
- What kind of cables do I need to connect? Where can I purchase them?
You will need a Cat5e Ethernet cable to hook up your computer to the residence hall network. A Cat5e cable is NOT the same as a phone cable. A phone line will typically have four wire leads on each end of the plug, and a little less than 3/8” wide. A Cat5e Ethernet cable has eight wire leads, and is a little less than ˝” wide. These cables can be pretty much purchased anywhere. We do sell a limited quantity of 5’ and 10’ cables at the beginning of the school year.
- Why won't my gaming console (GameCube, Playstation 2, XBOX) work on the network?
These devices use network technology that is similar to computers. Like any computer in the Residence Life network, those machines would also have to be registered in order for them to work. Registration of these devices will have to take place in the ResNet office after school begins.
- What is a MAC address and how do I find it on my computer?
A MAC address is a series of letters and numbers that is assigned to your network card inside your computer. This number is supposed to be unique.
Network Questions
- What regulations govern use of ResNet Internet access?
ResNet follow all of the University policies regarding network access. ResNet also has developed other policies that were approved by the RHA board. These policies, and the other University policies, can be found in the "Policies" link on this page.
- Does ResNet offer wireless service?
Laptops, PDA’s, and Tablet PC’s are allowed to use the UWS Wireless Network available in certain locations on campus. Some of those locations include the Rothwell Student Center, the library, and certain “hot spots” located in most buildings. You will need to have a UWS username and password in order to utilize the wireless network on campus. ResNet can assist any student, staff, or faculty member with trying to get their wireless device working with the network. UWS uses the standard 802.11g (which is compatible with 802.11b). Most devices work just fine on the wireless network, but sometimes we come across a few that we just can’t seem to get working. We’ll do our best to help.
Clean Access (formerly, NetReg) Questions
- How often do I need to register with NetReg, or the forth-coming Clean Access registration system?
UWS is currently changing from the current NetReg system to a new system called Clean Access. If NetReg is still active in the fall, you will only need to register once in order to gain network access. If Clean Access is ready for the fall, registration requirements have not been specifically assigned, but it may be anything from registering every 8 hours, to every day, to once a week. Unlike NetReg where once you are registered you’re registered, Clean Access is a “real-time” tool which will make sure that none of the requirements for access are removed from the computer. If they are, Clean Access will deny anyone who does not meet the special requirements. More information on this will be available later on in the “Connecting to ResNet” section.
- What is Clean Access?
Clean Access is a networking program that scans for various items on peoples computers before allowing internet access.
- What does Clean Access do?
Clean Access basically scans your computer to make sure you have the requirements set by the network administrator on your computer. If you do not it will re-direct you to a spot where you can get it. Clean Access will also scan your computer for known viruses and spyware to help keep both you and the network safe. If spyware or a virus is found on your computer Clean Access will provide tips on how to remove the threat. If you still can not remove the threat you can stop by ResNet and they will do what they can to remove the threat.
- Does Clean Access monitor what I do online?
No, it does not. Clean access checks that your system meets minimum software requirements (i.e. acceptable antivirus software, updated virus definitions, all necessary Windows Operating System updates, Windows XP service pack 2, and several other tests) so that you are able to gain internet access.
- How often do I have to log onto Clean Access?
Every time you restart your computer, or after an timeout expiration period. As of right now the timeout is set to 48 hours but is subject to change at anytime.
- How do I log back onto Clean Access after a timeout?
Click on the Clean Access Agent that is on your desktop, sign in using your username and password, this will once again scan your computer and you will receive access once you pass the scan.
- Do I have to use Clean Access?
Yes. If you want to have internet access in your room you will have to use Clean Access.
- How long does Clean Access take to scan my computer?
Scanning time varies from computer to computer. If you do not have the latest patches and updates, the process will take longer. As an estimate, if your computer meets all the minimum software requirements it can be as quick as a second, if you are required to install Windows updates it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to over an hour depending on the number of updates that need to be installed.
